The GMBA regional hub for the Hindu Kush Himalaya was established in September 2025 at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Nepal. The hub is under the leadership of Dr. Sunita Chaudhary. The Hindu Kush Himalaya regional hub aims to:

  • Strengthen biodiversity science of different taxonomic groups of the HKH region, to contribute to the global biodiversity assessment
  • Increase networking among the Hindu Kush Himalayan biodiversity scientists, consolidate relationships for a community of practice, encourage research opportunities for early career academics and students, and encourage a science–policy–practitioner interface through dialogues in the region
  • Organize capacity building activities for HKH mountain biodiversity research
  • Drive data and literature mobilization from Hindu Kush Himalaya into the GMBA Global Mountain Biodiversity Portal
  • Plan & coordinate HKH Mountain Biodiversity Workshops, whenever feasible
  • Encourage connectivity and cooperation with other Hubs and biodiversity scientists in the southern hemisphere (and elsewhere as necessary/practical)
  • Initiate and contribute to targeted projects focusing on the HKH with limited biodiversity data
