The GMBA regional hub for Southeast Asia was established in November 2025 at the Centre for Development and the Environment country office in Laos. The hub is under the leadership of Dr. Albrecht Ehrensperger.
The Laos hub aims to:

  • Foster networking among mountain biodiversity scientists and practitioners in Laos - with the option, if opportunities arise and means allow, to expand this activity to the Lower Mekong Region (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam) - by promoting GMBA relevant data, knowledge and communication. This will be done through: (1) targeted outreach to key contacts and institutions to introduce GMBA, leveraging existing regional networks and platforms, (2) utilizing CDE’s digital platforms (Pha Khao Lao and k4d) to avail periodic updates on GMBA-related initiatives and relevant content in accessible formats, and (3) advocating for mountain agrobiodiversity themes within the regional ALiSEA network, with an emphasis on building long-term relationships.
  • Represent and highlight mountain biodiversity challenges in policy discussions
  • Exchange information and experience with the other GMBA Hubs via virtual meetings, email exchanges, and collaborative use of existing resources
